Ben Foster has been signed to play John Gotti, Jr. in the biopic "Gotti: In The Shadow Of My Father" opposite John Travolta, Al Pacino and Kelly Preston.
Fiore Films made the announcement Tuesday, adding that pre-production will being in September and principal photography will start in New York on Jan. 3.
Levinson gave Foster one of his first feature-film roles, casting him in "Liberty Heights."
"Barry Levinson was the first director who took a chance on me, and I have a career because of him," Foster said in a statement. "This is a film about family, fathers and sons. I am deeply honored for the opportunity to work with Barry and the amazing cast he is assembling to help bring the story of the Gotti family to the screen."
Foster's credits include "The Mechanic," "Alpha Dog," "3:20 To Yuma" and "X-Men: The Last Stand."
Foster is represented by WME. The deal was negotiated for Fiore Films by Steven Beer of Greenberg Traurig.
The film will be directed and rewritten by Barry Levinson -- who replaced Nick Cassavetes in April month -- with additional writing by James Toback. Levinson and Toback teamed more than two decades ago on "Bugsy."
Fiore Films acquired life rights last year from John Gotti Jr., the son of the late mob boss John Gotti, to the story of his life with his father. "Gotti: In The Shadow Of My Father" will focus on the relationship of a father who lived and died by the mob code and a son who chose to leave that world behind.
