Will John Travolta Go Gangster and Play John Gotti?
By Elisabeth Rappe
John Travolta has never shied away from playing the bad guy. But will he be joining the Mob to play one of America’s most notorious figures?
TMZ and Entertainment Weekly both report that Travolta is in talks to play John Gotti, the former head of the Gambino crime family.
Gotti, nicknamed ”The Dapper Don” by the press, was quite a flamboyant figure in American organized crime, famous for his flashy style and outspoken ways.
He was arrested and tried numerous times, but always managed to dodge prison, leading to a new media nickname of “The Teflon Don.” In 1992, he was arrested and tried again on 13 counts of murder, loansharking, racketeering, obstruction of justice, illegal gambling and tax evasion. This time, the charges stuck to the Teflon Don. He was found guilty and spent the rest of his life in prison, leaving behind a colorful and violent crime legacy.
The biopic, titled “Gotti,” is being produced by Marty Ingels and Mark Fiore, and the full support of the Gotti family. They are also said to be in talks with James Franco to play John Jr., and with director Nick Cassavetes to helm the film.
As fun and flashy as it sounds to see Travolta don some Mafia stripes, we’re afraid you’ll have to file this one firmly under rumor. Travolta’s reps won’t comment, and the actor was coy about his involvement when confronted by TMZ. Incidentally, last summer TMZ broke the news that Sylvester Stallone was going to play Gotti, so perhaps every big actor’s name is being stuck to the Teflon Don.
But we know you’re hungry for a John Gotti movie. We are too! We suggest you cook up some spaghetti and meatballs, put on “The Godfather,” and relax until we can bring you some confirmation.
